i have a domain that has been up for awhile - it’s on EE6 and I just added it as a site on my EE account. It hadn’t been added on my EE account until now.
If I purchase EE pro and attach it to this site, will this allow me the option to upgrade to EE7 even though there is no site license key option in the CP settings on EE6?
ExpressionEngine v6 doesn’t require a paid license at all, though you can add a Pro license to it that adds significant functionality, including Pro Search and Pro Variables.
ExpressionEngine v7 requires a paid license IF you have more than 1 user account with access to the control panel. Only 1 cp user? No license required.
There’s no paid license required to upgrade from v6-v7, though if you have more than 1 user with CP access, the 1-click upgrade will warn you you’ll need to get a paid license. If you don’t? You get a banner letting you know you need a license. Nothing breaks, it’s not going to be a mission critical emergency bringing your site down. The banner doesn’t use blinking pink font or anything. Despite the fact Robin requested that it do so.
Should you add your v6/v7 site to your account on the ExpressionEngine.com Site Manager page? It’s not required, BUT if you are using a Pro license on v6 or have more than 1 cp user on v7, you’ll need to add your site on the EE Site Manager page and attach your license to it. Then make sure you copy that site license over to your site’s ‘Settings - General Settings’ license key field. Otherwise? The warning banner!
Did I mention the banner is annoying? Even without being blinking pink font.
If you are using a purchased add-on that uses the EE License validation? You’ll also need to create a site in the site manager, attach the add-on, and make sure the license number for the site is entered into your site’s license key field.
And even if you don’t actually need the site in the manager for license reasons, it can be a good way to help organize your add-on purchases and see what’s in use where.
As always, if you have any questions about what licenses you need or how to be certain everything is valid, drop us an email at support@expressioneng.com.
